My Neighbor Needed an Alibi
It would be rude to refuse. You are now also part of the cover story.
The scenario
Your neighbor knocked on your door at 7:15 AM and asked, very quickly, if you'd be willing to confirm a specific story to a specific person if asked. You said yes. You're now part of this.
You don't know what the story is, exactly. They asked you to remember three things — a time, a location, and a brand of cereal — and not to ask follow-up questions. You agreed because they once watched your cat for a weekend. Now you're standing in your kitchen rehearsing the cereal brand under your breath.
You will be late today because solidarity has costs.
Why it works
Meta-humor — using an alibi to explain why you need an alibi. It's self-aware, low-stakes, and lets you play the loyal-friend role.
How to deliver it
- ★Refuse to elaborate. The mystery is the punchline.
- ★Drop the cereal brand into conversation later, casually.
- ★Wink. Always wink.
- ★Charge your neighbor in baked goods.
