I Accidentally Joined a Circus

Quick errand. Wrong door. Ringmaster very persuasive. You're now contractually a fire-eater.

For entertainment purposes only

The scenario

You went into a building you thought was a Starbucks, signed something you thought was a Wi-Fi waiver, and emerged forty minutes later with a costume, a stage name, and a six-week residency.

The ringmaster was very nice. Disturbingly nice, in retrospect. They handed you a coffee, congratulated you on 'finally arriving,' and walked you through a door that was definitely the wrong door. There was glitter on the floor. There were trapezes. A small dog in a tiny hat barked once, judgmentally.

You tried to leave. They asked you to 'do just one juggle.' You did the juggle. It was, against all odds, good. Now there's a poster of you in the lobby and someone keeps calling you 'The Astonishing Phil.' Your name is not Phil. You are not astonishing. You are very late, however, and you are very sorry.

Why it works

Strong because the listener pictures the moment of accidental commitment — that universal feeling of agreeing to something before you've fully processed what it is.

How to deliver it

  • Use your stage name in the apology. 'The Astonishing Phil regrets the delay.'
  • Insist on the juggling. People love a small triumph.
  • Refuse to explain the dog.
  • Promise to bring everyone tickets. Never bring tickets.
