I Spilled Coffee on a Government Document
It was important. It is now both important and beige. Everything is on hold.
The scenario
You were filling out a form that the government insists must be filled out in original ink, and you sneezed mid-sip, and now the form looks like an antique map.
The form has 47 boxes. You had completed 41 of them. The coffee was full. The sneeze was sudden. The damage is, professionally speaking, total. You have called the office. They said you need to come in person to request a replacement, which requires an appointment, which is three weeks out.
You're late today because you've been on hold with three different agencies and you've aged visibly.
Why it works
Bureaucracy + clumsiness = universally believed. This excuse is functionally bulletproof because no one wants to follow up on it.
How to deliver it
- ★Use the phrase 'antique map.' It's the funniest beat.
- ★Reference the hold music with disdain.
- ★Imply, vaguely, that 'this is going to take weeks.'
- ★Volunteer to forward proof. They will not ask.
